Most of the site is covered in lowland tropical rainforest, including 10 ha secondary forest which was logged 30-40 years ago, 10 ha of pristine diverse old growth forest and 6 ha of Metroxylon vitiensis-dominated sago palm forest.
These areas are being protected and enriched with plantings of endangered endemic plant species and iconic native Fijian trees such as dakua salusalu (Retrophyllum vitiense) and dakua makadre (Agathis macrophylla) as well as bird-attracting flora. A small area of 2-3 ha which failed to regenerate well after logging is being converted into the more formal area of the Botanical Gardens.
Savurua Botanical Gardens is a work in progress with amenities and tracks to be developed as resources permit commencing in the second half of 2016.
Visitors are welcome but it is only recommended for experienced bush walkers until more facilities and more defined and marked tracks have been established. All flora and fauna is protected.
